VOCABULARY POST

1. One eye had been cut out when he was a kid, and now he wore the kind of thick glasses that made his eyes (both the real one and the glass one) preternaturally huge, like his whole head was basically just his fake eye and this real eye staring at you.

 PRETERNATURALLY: out of the ordinary course of nature; exceptional or abnormal;supernatural

That chair preternaturally moved by itself.

2/3. Fights were recounted, battles won amid wars sure to be lost; hope to clung to; families were both celebrated and denounced; it was agreed that friends just didn't get it; tears were shed; comfort proffered.

DENOUNCED: to announce/proclaim, especially as something evil or calamitous
PROFFERED: to but before a person for acceptance 

The doctor denounced the parents about the current situation in the operating room for their daughter.

Emily proffered Alexis to come stay at her house while her parents were gone. 

4. And if the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it.

INEVITABILITY: unable to be avoided, evaded, or escaped; certain; necessary

The inevitability of the traffic on the bridge really effects the amount of time to cross it. 

5. Most of the time, I could forget about it, but the inexorable truth is this: They might be glad to have me around, but I was the alpha and omega of my parents' suffering. 

INEXORABLE: unyielding; unalterable

Earthquakes are usually inexorable to control. 

6. It was a quick flight to Detroit, where the little electric car met us as we disembarked and drove us to the gate for Amsterdam. 

DISEMBARKED: to leave an aircraft or another vehicle 

My cellphone began to ring as I disembarked the bus. 

7. He came home from the hospital a few days later, finally and irrevocably robbed of his ambitions. 

IRREVOCABLY: not to be revoked or recalled

The stocks on the market fell irrevocably.

8. Or did an omnipotent God create basketballs out of the vacuum of space?

OMNIPOTENT: almighty or infinite power as God

No one is as omnipotent as our God.

9. I went downstairs to the tiny windowless gift shop and asked the decrepit volunteer sitting on a stool behind a cash register what kind of flowers  smell the strongest.

DECREPIT: weakened by old age

One of our school teachers who recently retired was decrepit.

10. Sadly, the bridge is already under insurgent control due to questionable strategizing by my bereft cohort.

BEREFT: deprived

She was to deprived in energy she refused to work.

SYNOPSIS: "THE FAULT IN OUR STARS" by John Green is a story about two teens named Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace Lancaster. Augustus was a basketball star, until he lost his right leg to osteosarcoma. Hazel was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer at only age 13. They meet at a support group, and end up spending a lot of time together, resulting in a trip to Amsterdam.

Book Review Criteria

VOCABULARY POST
As you are reading, look up 10 words that you do not understand.

Write:
1. The line from the novel that the word is in and underline the word
2. The dictionary definition of the word
3. A new, original sentence using the word in context

Examples:
Bad = The child was precocious. (I still have no idea what the word means!)
Good = The precocious child was able to discuss nuclear physics with the scientists at the table. (I understand that this means she is very intelligent-more so than a normal child)

READING JOURNAL POSTS 

Your task is to complete 3 journal responses on your blog. (one from the beginning of your novel, one from the middle of the novel and one from the end)

Questions to Consider for you Responses:
- What is the setting of the novel? Is the setting important or could the novel happen anywhere and why? – SETTING
- Describe a problem faced by the main character. Explain how the main character deals with the problem. – CONFLICT
- Describe an experience you (or someone you know) had that was like the experience of the main character in the book. – PROTAGONIST

- Describe the feeling of emotion that you experiences as you were reading this section and what caused this feeling? – MOOD
- Write your opinion to a character’s action or reaction. What would you have done?
- Write about a connection to another book you have read or a movie you have seen. (Think of similar characters, plots, settings and themes).
